Minecraft es un videojuego independiente de construcción, de tipo «mundo abierto» o sandbox creado originalmente por Markus «Notch» Persson, y posteriormente desarrollado por su empresa, Mojang AB. Fue lanzado públicamente el 17 de mayo de 2009 en su versión alpha, después de diversos cambios fue lanzada su versión completa el 18 de noviembre de 2011.
En Minecraft los jugadores pueden realizar construcciones mediante cubos con texturas tridimensionales, igualmente pueden explorar el entorno, recolectar y crear recursos, así como combatir y otras acciones más. En su lanzamiento comercial el juego tiene dos modos principales: Supervivencia, en el que los jugadores deben adquirir recursos para mantener su salud y hambre; y creativo, donde los jugadores tienen acceso ilimitado a los recursos del juego, la habilidad de volar y no requieren mantener su salud y hambre. Independientemente de estos modos de juego también se puede definir la dificultad del juego, siendo el modo más tranquilo el pacífico, que a diferencia de las demás dificultades, no permite que aparezcan monstruos en el juego que puedan interactuar con el jugador. También existe un tercer modo de juego, denominado hardcore, que es similar al modo supervivencia, con la diferencia de que este solo puede ser jugado en la más alta dificultad y de que el jugador posee una sola vida, por lo que cuando muere termina la partida.
